Bloomington Advisor John Copenhaver: Suitability Complaint

Edward Jones financial advisor John Copenhaver (CRD# 5516072) recently received an investor complaint alleging more than $500,000 in damages. Financial Industry Regulatory Authority records show that he is a broker and an investment advisor based in Bloomington, Illinois.

Mr. Copenhaver’s BrokerCheck report discloses one investor complaint. Filed in August 2022, it alleges that as a representative of Edward Jones, he “made investments that were not appropriate for the client.” The pending complaint alleges damages of $580,000.

One of many key investor protections is the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority’s suitability standard. As outlined by FINRA Rule 2111, this guideline requires brokers and firms to “have a reasonable basis to believe that a recommended transaction or investment strategy involving a security or securities is suitable for the customer, based on the information obtained through the reasonable diligence of the member or associated person to ascertain the customer’s investment profile.” Registered representatives who lack such a reasonable basis and/or who recommend investments that aren’t suitable for their clients, are considered to have violated Rule 2111.

According to the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority, John Copenhaver holds 14 years of securities industry experience. Based in Bloomington, Illinois, he has been a broker and an investment advisor with Edward Jones since 2008. He has no previous registrations. His credentials include the passage of three securities industry qualifying exams: the General Securities Representative Examination, or Series 7; the Securities Industry Essentials Examination, or SIE; and the Uniform Combined State Law Examination, or Series 66. He holds 27 state licenses. (Information current as of September 20, 2022.)
