New York City financial advisor Adam Kotz (CRD# 6286443) allegedly recommended unsuitable investments, according to a recent investor complaint. Records provided by the Securities and Exchange Commission indicate that he is currently registered as an investment adviser with Mariner Wealth Advisors.
Mr. Kotz’s Investment Adviser Public Disclosure discloses one investor complaint. Filed in January 2024, it alleges that as a representative of Mariner Wealth Advisors, he recommended unsuitable mutual fund and options investments. (For reference, FINRA Rule 2111 requires brokers to recommend only investments and investment strategies which they have a reasonable basis to believe are appropriate for their customers’ individual investment profiles.) The pending complaint alleges damages of $4 million.
Mariner Wealth Advisors’ website includes a profile of Mr. Kotz that describes him as a Director and Senior Wealth Advisor at the firm. “Adam works with individuals and families to analyze their investment portfolios, concentrated positions, retirement plan investment options and analyzes their tax situations and provides tax strategies,” it states. “He also advises clients on charitable giving, stock option planning, IRA beneficiary and distribution planning.
Elsewhere, the firm describes the services it provides to businesses and individual investors, including tax planning and trust services. “We begin by listening to your greatest joys and challenges and what keeps you up at night,” it states. “Because life is always changing, the financial strategy we create together will change along with it.”
According to the Securities and Exchange Commission, Adam Kotz holds eight years of securities industry experience. Based in New York City, he has been an investment advisor with Mariner Wealth Advisors since 2015. His credentials include the passage of one securities industry qualifying exam: the Uniform Investment Adviser Law Examination, or Series 65. He is licensed in New Jersey and New York.
