Derek Ober: Did Northwestern Advisor Mislead Investor?

Sarasota, Florida financial advisor Derek Ober (CRD# 6634902) recently received an investor complaint alleging that his advice resulted in damages. Financial Industry Regulatory Authority records show that he is registered as a broker with Northwestern Mutual Investment Services.

Mr. Ober’s BrokerCheck report discloses one investor complaint. field in November 2024, it alleges that as a representative of Northwestern Mutual Investment Services, he misled the customer and recommended an insurance policy exchange that was not in the customer’s best interest. The pending complaint alleges unspecified damages.

For reference, FINRA rules and other securities industry standards prohibit brokers like Mr. Ober from misrepresenting material information relating to the investments they recommend to their customers. FINRA Rule 2020 specifically stipulates that no broker shall “effect any transaction in, or induce the purchase or sale of, any security by means of any manipulative, deceptive or other fraudulent device or contrivance.” FINRA-registered representatives who make misrepresentations regarding investments or investment strategies may be held liable in the event of losses. They may also be subject to disciplinary action by securities industry regulators.

Northwestern Mutual Investment Services’s website includes a page describing Mr. Ober’s “personalized” approach to working with his clients. “This individualized approach help provide clarity regarding the complexities of our clients’ unique financial situations; resulting in a combined sense of empowerment and comfort as they move through life’s journey,” it explains. “We focus on supporting pre-retirees, retirees worried about asset distribution, and current/former high level corporate employees. We believe that our community and clients deserve a financially secure and bright future.”

According to the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority, Derek Ober holds eight years of securities industry experience. Based in Sarasota, Florida, he has been registered as a broker with Northwestern Mutual Investment Services since 2016. His credentials include the passage of three securities industry qualifying exams: the Uniform Securities Agent State Law Examination, or Series 63; the General Securities Representative Examination, or Series 7; and the the Securities Industry Essentials Examination, or SIE.
