San Diego, California financial advisor Matthew Hurley (CRD# 1682165) allegedly recommended unsuitable investments, according to a recent investor complaint. Financial Industry Regulatory Authority records show that he is registered as a broker and an investment advisor with Independent Financial Group, doing business as Hurley Wealth Management.
Mr. Hurley’s BrokerCheck report discloses multiple investor complaints. Filed in December 2025, it alleges that as a representative of Independent Financial Group, he recommended investments that were “highly risky, foreign, concentrated, and not suitable.” The pending complaint alleges damages of $206,000. A comment included with the complaint’s disclosure defends him against the allegations. “Initial investigation did not uncover evidence to support the allegations,” it states. “Firm intends to defend claim for failure to state a claim on which relief can be granted.”
An earlier complaint, filed in 2015, alleged that as a representative of Oppenheimer & Company, he charged excessive commissions and failed to implement a stop loss order. The complaint reached a settlement of $15,000.
A third complaint, filed in 1996, alleged that as a representative of Prudential Securities, he failed to follow instructions with regard to options sales. The complaint reached a settlement of $14,999.

Based in San Diego, California, he has been registered as a broker and an investment advisor with Independent Financial Group since 2020, doing business as Hurley Wealth Management. His past registrations include Wells Fargo Clearing Services, Oppenheimer & Company, Merrill Lynch, Prudential Securities, AG Edwards & Sons, Painewebber, and Blinder Robinson & Company. His credentials include the passage of four securities industry qualifying exams: the Securities Industry Essentials Examination, or SIE; the Uniform Investment Adviser Law Examination, or Series 65; the Uniform Securities Agent State Law Examination, or Series 63; and the General Securities Representative Examination, or Series 7.
