Phillip Allen: Madison Avenue Securities Advisor Faces $393K Complaint

A recent investor complaint against Greenville, South Carolina financial advisor Phillip Allen (CRD# 1337542) alleges that he recommended an unsuitable investment. Financial Industry Regulatory Authority records show that he is registered as a broker and an investment advisor with Madison Avenue Securities.

Mr. Allen’s BrokerCheck report discloses multiple investor complaints. The most recent, filed in August 2026, alleges that as a Madison Avenue Securities representative, he recommended an unsuitable investment in an interval fund. The pending complaint alleges damages of $393,000.

An earlier investor complaint, filed in 2000, alleged that as a representative of WMA Securities, he misrepresented a variable universal life insurance policy. The complaint reached a settlement of $39,542.26.

FINRA rules require brokers like Mr. Allen to recommend only investments and investment strategies that conform to a standard known as suitability. As established by FINRA Rule 2111, this standard holds that brokers must “have a reasonable basis to believe that a recommended transaction or investment strategy” is appropriate for a customer’s investment profile, which includes their age, investment background, net worth, risk tolerance, and other concerns. An investment without principal protection, for instance, might be considered unsuitable for conservative investors with a low risk tolerance. Brokers who recommend their customers invest in unsuitable products or strategies may be held liable in the event of losses.

According to the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority, Phillip Allen holds 41 years of securities industry experience. Based in Greenville, South Carolina, he has been registered as a broker and an investment advisor with Madison Avenue Securities since 2018 and 2017, respectively. His past registrations include Capital Investment Group, WC Smith, WMA Securities, Washington Square Securities, United Securities Alliance, and PFS Investments. His credentials include the passage of five securities industry qualifying exams: the Investment Company Products/Variable Contracts Principal Examination, or Series 26; the Securities Industry Essentials Examination, or SIE; the Investment Company Products/Variable Contracts Representative Examination, or Series 6; the Uniform Investment Adviser Law Examination, or Series 65; and the Uniform Securities Agent State Law Examination, or Series 63.
