Ron Holmes: REIT Complaint Against Calton Advisor

Vineland, New Jersey financial advisor Ron Holmes (CRD# 1407315) recently received an investor complaint alleging that he recommended unsuitable investments. Financial Industry Regulatory Authority records show that he is registered as a broker and an investment advisor with Calton & Associates.

Mr. Holmes’s BrokerCheck report discloses one investor complaint. Filed in October 2026, it alleges that as a representative of Calton & Associates, he provided poor customer service and recommended unsuitable real estate investment trust (REIT) products. The pending complaint alleges unspecified damages.

FINRA rules stipulate that brokers like Mr. Holmes can only recommend investments and strategies that are suitable for a given customer. Under FINRA Rule 2111, a broker must “have a reasonable basis to believe that a recommended transaction or investment strategy” is appropriate for the customer’s objectives, a basis reached through reasonable diligence into the customer’s investment profile. FINRA Rule 2010 requires representatives to “observe high standards of commercial honor and just and equitable principles of trade.” Brokers who recommend unsuitable investments may be held liable in the event of losses.

FINRA has warned investors to exercise caution when weighing investments in real estate investment trusts, in particular non-traded REITs. These investments aren’t traded on national stock exchanges, as their name suggests, and as FINRA observed in a 2016 investor alert, they are “generally illiquid, often for periods of eight years or more.” FINRA warned further that non-traded REITs may have limited early redemption opportunities and considerable fees: as such, they are “rarely, if ever, suitable for short-term investors,” and they can even present illiquidity risks for long-term investors. As a 2011 investor alert noted, non-traded REIT distributions “are not guaranteed and may exceed operating cash flow.” Investors interested in learning more about the risks associated with non-traded REIT products can find additional information in FINRA’s web resources.

According to the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority, Ron Holmes holds 41 years of securities industry experience. Based in Vineland, New Jersey, he has been registered as a broker and an investment advisor with Calton & Associates since 2004. His past registrations include USAllianz Securities, SunAmerica Securities, FSC Securities, and First Investors. His credentials include the passage of eight securities industry qualifying exams: the Investment Company Products/Variable Contracts Principal Examination, or Series 26; the General Securities Principal Examination, or Series 24; the Securities Industry Essentials Examination, or SIE; the Corporate Securities Limited Representative Examination, or Series 62; the General Securities Representative Examination, or Series 7; the Investment Company Products/Variable Contracts Representative Examination, or Series 6; the Uniform Investment Adviser Law Examination, or Series 65; and the Uniform Securities Agent State Law Examination, or Series 63. He holds 7 state licenses. (Information current as of November 1, 2026.)
