GWG Complaint Against Tim Hucks, Rising Tide Advisor

An investment in GWG Holdings is at issue a recent investor complaint lodged against Tim Hucks (CRD# 1023012), a financial advisor based in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. Records provided and maintained by the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority reveal that Mr. Hucks is a representative of Capital Investment Group and the owner and president of investment advisory firm Rising Tide. 

GWG Complaint Alleges Six-Figure Losses

Mr. Hucks’ BrokerCheck report discloses one investor complaint against him. Filed in November 2022, it alleges that as a representative of Rising Tide, he recommended an unsuitable investment in GWG Holdings. For reference, GWG Holdings was a Texas-based asset manager that sold investments in GWG L bonds before entering bankruptcy and falling under SEC scrutiny. The pending complaint alleges damages of $99,000.

What Is Rising Tide?

Rising Tide Inc. is an investment advisory firm registered in North Carolina, according to the company’s website. It was founded almost 30 years ago, in 1993, and Mr. Hucks serves as its owner and president. Offering securities through Capital Investment Group, Rising Tide states that its specialty is “working with university faculty and staff,” and describes Mr. Hucks himself as a “university retirement specialist.” The firm notes that it is not directly affiliated with any universities, nor does it receive compensation from university vendors. Its asset allocation model, according to the company’s “About Us” page, is “based on risk, reward and time frame analysis.” Its “Investment Philosophy” page, meanwhile, stresses its commitment to protecting the client, carefully researching investments, broad diversification, careful asset allocation, and long-term investing.

Tim Hucks Is Based in Chapel Hill

According to the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority, Tim Hucks has spent 40 years as a broker.  He has been based in Chapel Hill, North Carolina since 1993, when he initially registered with Capital Investment Group. He registered as an investment adviser with Wilbanks Smith & Thomas Asset Management in 2015 and wth Capital Investment Advisory Services in April 2022. Before he joined Capital Investment Group, he was registered with firms including Securities Service Network and John Hancock Distributors.
