Coral Gables, Florida financial advisor Jorge Montealegre (CRD# 1799139) allegedly recommended an unsuitable investment strategy, according to a recent investor complaint. Financial Industry Regulatory Authority records show that he is registered as a broker and an investment advisor with Oppenheimer.
Mr. Montealegre’s BrokerCheck report discloses multiple investor complaints. The most recent, filed in July 2026, alleges that as an Oppenheimer representative, he acted negligently, made material misrepresentations and omissions, committed fraud, breached contract, violated FINRA rules, and recommended an unsuitable investment strategy. The pending complaint alleges unspecified damages.
In a statement included with the complaint’s disclosure, Mr. Montealegre defends himself against the allegations. “I at all times conducted myself in an appropriate and professional manner,” he writes. “I deny all allegations of wrongdoing, and intend to vigorously defend myself against the false, unwarranted and unsubstantiated allegations.”
An earlier investor complaint, filed in 2007, alleged that as a representative of UBS International, he made an unauthorized mutual fund trade. The complaint reached a settlement of $2,777.29.
For reference, FINRA rules require broker-dealers and their representatives, like Mr. Montealegre, to follow the suitability standard. As outlined by FINRA Rule 2111, this rule states that they may only recommend their customers invest in products and strategies that are appropriate for the customers’ individual investment profiles. This includes factors such as the client’s investment goals, investment experience, liquidity needs, age, net worth, risk tolerance, and income. The suitability standard is similar to but distinct from the fiduciary standard followed by investment advisers, which requires placing the investor’s interests above the adviser’s.
According to the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority, Jorge Montealegre holds 38 years of securities industry experience. Based in Coral Gables, Florida, he has been registered as a broker and an investment advisor with Oppenheimer since 2007 and 2008, respectively. His past registrations include UBS International, UBS Painewebber, Prudential Securities, and Lehman Brothers. His credentials include the passage of five securities industry qualifying exams: the Securities Industry Essentials Examination, or SIE; the General Securities Representative Examination, or Series 7; the National Commodity Futures Examination, or Series 3; the Uniform Investment Adviser Law Examination, or Series 65; and the Uniform Securities Agent State Law Examination, or Series 63. He holds 7 state licenses. (Information current as of August 25, 2026.)
